Exclusive Interview with DJ Scarface!

 

1.) So when did you first get into the Hip Hop scene?

I Started listening and going to Hip Hop Concerts way back in the mid 80’s.

2.) What was the first things you notied you were going to have to do to be a great DJ?

Be versitile! Be able to mess with all types of music.

3.) How did you first come with your stage name?

Dj Scarface – Thought i was the Tony Montana of this Dj game after doing it for a decade.

4.) What are some of the differences you had seen in your early start to now days in the game?

More mixing those days and now you dont hear mixes much. Mixtapes are fulll of Studio beats and the tracks are rarely mixed together. You really had to be talented to make it back than.

5.) Is their a big diffeence to artists getting into the scene versus the 80’s and early 90’s?

 Ya, back than everything was new and now its all been done before and there is a blueprint for it.

6.) What do you feel are some of the advantages to being able to starting as an indei artist today, verses the 90’s?

7.) what are some of the things that have made it harder?

Everyone and their moma is dj ing or rappin!

8.) Do you think it is easier for DJ’s to get into mixing with Major record lables?

No i dont think so, theres not a market for it. Thats why im remxing!

9.) What is the largest tool you would say you use to becoming successful in the mixing scene?

 Self Promotion, making mixtapes and passing it out. – Degree in Business also helped me. And the most important having a talent for it.

10.) What is the best thing any independent entertainer can do to keep his career’s longevitey?

 Dont sell out and keep it real to whateva your doing! Reaching the masses is not always good.

11.) What is the best project you have ever worked on?

 I keep getting better as i get older. So i would have to say LEGENDS vol 2 mixtape that i just finished.

Always wanted to do a Nas Mixtape.Some of these remixes are instant classic!

12.) Who are some of your main influences to this game?

 Rakim, Chuck D, Nas, KRS1, EPMD, LL Cool J, The Notorious BIG, Nas, Snoop Dogg,Common– man i can go on.

 13.) You were influenced by alot of pioneers of this hip hop game, do you have any new favorites that you listen to today?

 Common, Kanye West, 50, Jadakiss,Talib Kweli and Immortal Technique. They all doing some unblelievable Sh…..

14.) What is your take on the current state of the industry?

 Too much bad shit out there. Lack of Substance in music. But artist like Nas, Common, Kanye West,and Jay Z, They Keepin Hip Hop Alive. 

15.) what is your take on the current state of our country?

Thank God for President Obama, we moving in the right direction. People dont give him the credit he deserves.

There is a group of people, wont throw any names out, they are destroying the country with their greed.

People need to wake up!

16.) Who have been some of the most amazing artists you have worked with?

 hmmm, i can tell you that i want to work with Artist like Nas, Rakim and Chuck D.

17.)What would you say is the most important thing an artist should remember when working with a DJ?

Let the DJ do his thang!

18.) What are some of the top things a new DJ should remember when breaking into the industry and making a name?

First get good at what you do. Promoting yourself the right way and Networking!

19.) What projects are you currently working on right now, that we could look out for?

Im working on a Nas Mixtape which also features remixes from Biggie, Tupac, Talib Kweli, Jadakiss

Dr Dre and Snoop Doog and oh it aint a hit til you put Nate Dogg on it. RIP Nate Dogg!

21.) any advice, guidance or words for our young folks out their?

Have faith in God, Get your education, and be nice to people. Stop the Bullying!

    Yo I remember hearing him on the radio back in the early 90's mixing and playing the hottest tracks of it's time in L.A on 103.1 Groove Radio. Fell in love with his deep house mixes. His skills was way ahead of it's time! He truly sounded like a perfectionist! Been a fan 15 years now and been a follower on his website ever since! Ya'll need to check it out, Believe me he's always mixing the hottest remixes! Dj Scarface will always live on! Can't wait for his next mixtape! 1 luv

    I have said it before and I am going to say it again. DJ Scarface is the BEST DJ in the Westcoast. He is true to the game and to him self, that's the real reason why we still hear about him. I have seen him make people step out of the mind and body with his cool mixessss. My fav mix is the Original Scarface LP and it goes something like this… Ok I am getting ready to reloadddding! Remember Tony?
