(New Exclusive Interview) Getting To Know The Artist Gabriel De Los Reyes
1. How Long Have You Been Doing Music?
I’ve been doing music since I was 12. My first birthday present as a teenager was studio time. I started writing poetry at age 10 for my mother and got into Spoken Word at 13, which led to me becoming class poet and eventually getting scholarships for my writing.
2. What Do You Feel Your Music Brings Differently To The Marketplace?
I feel my music brings a Latino voice to Hip-Hop. I also have an educated, rhetorical background of study, which informs my music in a way that brings a deeper element of informed stylistic and literary decisions. I have an educated approach to music and have a background in music theory, which strongly opposes the popular method of creating music based on creativity. My music brings philosophy.
3. How Long Did it take For You To Come Up With Your Style?
I am still coming up with my style. My whole life. The whole passion is coming up with a style that is completely your own and won’t be copied by others better than you. I am not the first to write educatedly and I am not the first to be pedagogical in my approach, but I feel I can relate to those trying to make it. It is not an easy game to get into, but I am trying my best to get into it.
4. What is the concept behind Palm Tree and how did you come up with this record?
I wrote Palm Tree because I have a deep respect for my city. I think Miami needs an anthem and I wanted to write something along the lines of a Rick Ross, Uncle Luke, Pitbull track, but not with the same style. As a Latino I have a place in this game and I want my voice to be heard as an artist from Miami.
5. How has the environment you live in affected the type of music you make and your career?
My environment is filled with people from all backgrounds, all incomes, and all beliefs. I have a huge respect for people and their lives. I think my music stems from this deep respect and curiosity to write songs that can speak for my generation and my people. I hope my music can at least touch those who listen and give them justice. Not everyone is successful, not everyone is a failure. Not everyone is rich, not everyone is poor. Not everyone is from the same area or of the same race. But, my music can bring people together because it’s all about entertainment and love.
6. What is the hardest thing in life you had to overcome and how did you overcome it?
The hardest thing I had to overcome was passing school. I had to study and really understand the information given to me. I went to school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and to see myself as more than an artist is at times a challenge, but I have to do so if I am going to be a real human being with thoughts and passion beyond my music. 🙂
7. Where do you see your brand and career in the next 5 years?
I see myself touring the world and selling my music with profits in the millions. Let’s see!
